Grannie's Sugar Cookies

My mom, sister and I used to make these around Christmastime when we were kids.  We loved to help decorate them with sprinkles or icing.  They are good any time of year, however, and they have that great buttery taste!

1/2 cup butter

1 cup sugar

1 medium egg

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons baking powder

2 cups flour

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

1. Cream butter and sugar together.

2. Blend in one egg.

3. Sift salt, baking powder and flour. Add to creamed butter/sugar mixture.

4. Add vanilla and kneed into a big dough ball.

5. Wrap dough in cellophane and chill for one hour.

6. Slice and bake cookies in a 400-degree oven for 8-10 minutes. These work great with cookie cutters of all types.  To keep dough from sticking to your hands, the rolling pin, or the rolling surface, lightly dust with dry flour.

Frosting

4 cups powdered sugar

1/2 cup butter

5 tablespoons milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

Blend together until smooth.
